What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation has long been used in the dental field to help keep patients calm and comfortable. Pediatric Dental Sedation has become more popular in the past few years to safely provide treatment to small or uncooperative children. We understand that visiting the dentist isn't always a fun experience and many children have anxiety related to treatment. For these reasons, we offer different types of sedations to help make your child’s experience more relaxed.

Why might your child benefit from sedation?

There are a few reasons sedation may be the best choice for your child. The main reason is comfort. Some children may be too young to physically and emotionally handle dental treatment, some may need it due to high anxiety, and some may need it to make up for negative previous experiences.

Who would benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

We understand that visiting the dentist isn't always a fun experience and that some children have anxiety related to their treatment, or are too young to handle dental treatment. For these reasons, we offer different types of sedation options to help make your child's experience with us more relaxed and trauma-free.

What happens during Sedation Dentistry?

This depends on what type of sedation is being used.

For nitrous oxide, a mask that sits over the nose of your child will be used prior, during, and for a few minutes after treatment is completed. Nitrous, mixed with oxygen, allows cooperative children to be more comfortable during dental procedures. Once the procedure is over, we turn off the nitrous and allow the patient to breathe 100% oxygen for approximately 3-5 minutes. This is done to "flush" the nitrous completely out of the patient's respiratory system prior to leaving the office.

For conscious sedation, your child will be given an oral/nasal sedative (usually a liquid). This drug allows most children to undergo the dental procedure with minimal discomfort and/or anxiety and may create amnesia (inability to remember procedure).

For IV sedation, your child will be sedated by an anesthesiologist. In this type of sedation, your child will be completely asleep for the duration of the procedure and will only wake up after all the planned dental procedures are completed. This is the most predictable type of sedation.
